A much depleted 1st team suffered a heavy defeat against Whitby at the seaside ground. Missing 5 senior players for various reasons, stand in skipper Simon Cousins lost the toss and Sherburn found themselves batting first. Daley Wharton accompanied Cousins to the wicket and hit the first ball from Australian paceman Godfrey through the covers for 4, at which point things started to go downhill rapidly for Sherburn! Godfrey ripped through the top order reducing Sherburn to 34-6, with only the outstanding Rich Woodhead providing any resistance with a gritty innings. Rich then received battling support from the tail, many of whom were playing their first matches of the season, putting on the highest partnership (16) of the innings with veteran Neil Simpson for the 7th wicket. Woodhead was finally dismissed by Godfrey for 36, an outstanding knock in the circumstances, as the Australian finished with magnificent figures of 8-14 from 11 overs. An impressive display, which provided a cutting edge to a Whitby attack that otherwise didn’t really threaten. Regular scorer Lee Metcalfe was the not out batsman as he proved he still hasn’t lost it!
The Whitby batsmen found the going much easier as openers S Taylor and A Lyth began in aggressive style, bowlers Stu Stocks and Daley Wharton having little luck despite a wholehearted effort. Sherburn stuck at it in the field, never giving up, and finally got the breakthrough they deserved with the score on 60 when Cousins bowled Lyth round his legs as the opener advanced down the pitch. Shortly afterwards Taylor perished for 34 as Sherburn claimed a much needed point. Whitby then proceeded to knock off the required runs with no further alarms.
A tough day for Sherburn as Godfrey proved he is one of the most potent bowlers in the league, however in trying circumstances, Sherburn’s patched up team battled to the end. Many thanks to the lads who helped out, and to the rest of us, its time to find some performances before it is too late!
Flixton 76-7 (20 Overs) - B.Briggs 26ret, D.Brannan 8, L.Jonses 4, J.Walmsley 0, C.Collings 15, J.Waters 2, H.Walmsley 7, B.Hutchinson 5no, G.Howorth 1, W.Hutchinson 1no. Bowling - T.Haldenby 3-0-30-2, B.Simpson 3-0-17-1, D.Phillips 3-1-3-0, S.Pickard 3-1-8-1, J.Thomson 3-1-4-1, G.Worthy 3-0-7-1, C.Pickard 1-0-1-0.
Sherburn 77-6 (19.5 Overs) - R.Worthy 0, B.Simpson 4, Jonny Pickard 9, J.Thomson 26ret, D.Phillips 1, S.Pickard 21no, T.Haldenby 1, Jack Pickard 7no. Bowling - B.Briggs 5-1-16-1, C.Collings 5-0-25-3, D.Brannan 5-0-20-0, J.Walmsley 3-1-5-1, J.Waters 2-0-7-0.
Sherburn turned in a mature team performance to topple top of the table Flixton by 4 wickets with a ball to spare.
Flixton batted first and powerhouse Ben Briggs set about the Sherburn bowling in awesome fashion. Briggs retired on 26 in only the third over of the game! This put Sherburn up against it from the word go. Opening bowler Tom Haldenby showed terrific character however to pick himself up after the early onslaught of Briggs to claim two quick wickets. At the other end, Ben Simpson removed opener Dave Brannan to sway the game in Sherburn’s favour. These where all early developments in the game as Flixton had plenty of time for rebuilding. First and second change bowlers Stu Pickard and Dave Phillips bowled very well, giving Flixton very little width as they looked to peg Flixton back. Phillips only going for 3 runs off 3 overs, impressive. Pickard finishing with 1-8 off his 3 overs. Then came another double bowling change which saw Jamie Thomson and George Worthy introduced. Worthy as usual didn’t hang about on joining the wicket taking stakes as he removed dangerman C.Collings who hit a plucky 15 to keep Flixton in the hunt. Thomson got his reward for some beatifully flighted spin bowling when Jack Pickard stumped Harry Walmsley who was looking in decent nick. With Alex Bryan claiming the 7 wicket, the Flixton innings closing on 76-7, it looked anyones game. After a shaky start, well bowled and fielded Sherburn!
Sherburn didn’t get off to the best of starts chasing Flixton’s score. Opener Robin Worthy was left stranded after some poor calling from Ben Simpson. Simpson soon followed to leave Sherburn on 12-2. That left Jamie Thomson and Jonny Pickard with some rebuilding to do. This was not going to be easy as opening bowler Ben Briggs was bowling a hostile spell at one end and C.Collings was giving very little away at the other. Things looked to be going OK for Sherburn as Thomson and Pickard played themselves in and started to get the board ticking over again. The strength of Flixton’s bowling attack however, once again shone through as Jonny Pickard was bowled by C.Collings for a handy 9. Next in was Dave Phillips who found the bowling of Ben Briggs too much as he was sent packing an over later. With the opening bowlers out of the way, Briggs finishing with 1-16 off 5 (Sherburn did well to keep him out!), and Collings 2-35. It was down to skipper Stu Pickard and Tom Haldenby to see if they could fashion a result. Unfortunately, Haldenby was soon on his way, bowled by J.Walmsley. Now things were not looking good for Sherburn as they were 56 with batting supplies starting to run thin. In came Stu’s brother Jack. They had 8 overs to see what they could do, the main objective was to keep wickets intact, and they did. Jack put on an excellent display of straight batting, cutting anything with width, hopefully this will spur Jack on as he really looks like hes’s turned the corner. He provided the perfect foundation for brother Stu to caress the ball to all angles as they shared a measured partnership, knocking the runs off with one ball to spare. It was very impressive how the lads didn’t panic. The pressure was on Sherburn after an electric start when they bowled, they responded. The pressure was on JT with wickets falling, he responded. The pressure on Jack and Stu was heavy but they never panicked and again, responded. A good benchmark for what to do when things are going against you. If you can do against teams like that, you can do it against anyone! WELL DONE LADS! Well played Flixton in what was an excellent game of cricket. The spirit of the game was excellent and it was nice to see the sportsmanship between school mates playing against each other.
Sherburn 2nd XI 209-8 (40 Overs) - Joel Wharton 108no, L.Jack 6, D.Simpson 0, K.Stocks 3, N.Dobson 36, Jordan Wharton 6, S.Pickard 16, P.Pickard 2, R.Pickering 1, C.Pickard 7no. Bowling - M.Webster 12-0-37-1, John Wharton 14-1-60-2, A.Duffil 2-0-24-0, D.Fleming 6-0-34-2. S.Pease 6-0-38-2.
Heslerton 2nd XI 144 all out (36 Overs) - J.Howden 44, John Wharton 0, R.Brown 23, E.Senior 1, M.Webster 16, T.Milner 7, A.Duffil 0, S.Pease 19no, D.Flemming 0, D.Ellis 16, J.Watson 0. Bowling - P.Pickard 5-1-21-0, R.Pickering 9-2-33-2, N.Dobson 11-4-26-4, S.Pickard 5-0-18-2, D.Bean 4-0-20-2, D.Simpson 2-0-11-0.
Sherburn continued their fantastic weekend with a thumping 65 run over top of the table Heslerton 2nds. This still leaves Sherburn some work to do but but puts them right back in the mix for promotion. It was very much a Wharton affair with dad John captaining Heslerton as sons Jordan and Joel turned out for Sherburn.
Sherburn batted first with openers Lee Jack and Joel Wharton making a watchful start preserving wickets against the new ball which nibbled about a little. In the 12th over with the score on 32-0, opener Jack ran himself out and no3 Dan Simpson quickly followed in the same over, bowled by John Wharton. Two overs later skipper Kev Stocks came and went as he was bowled by one that didn’t get up, again from John Wharton. With the score on 41-3 from 14 overs, Sherburn had it all to do. The tables soon turned though as Nick Dobson came in and destroyed Adam Duffil for 20 off one over. Joel Wharton and Dobson shared a 64 run partnership for the 4th wicket until Dobson was bowled by D.Fleming as he exited for a quickfire 36 from 7 overs at the crease, hitting 5 fours and 2 sixes along the way. 3 Overs later Jordan Wharton was another who ran himself out. All that was required now was someone to partner Joel Wharton as he neared what was looking a beatifully constructed 50 having not yet given anything like a chance away. Stu Pickard came in at 7 and once again showed his is the man for the job, staying at the crease for 13 overs to share a valuable 66 run partnership with Joel who had now passed a well deserved 50 and looked to be in cruise control as he regularly drilled anything wayward along the deck for four. Pickard eventually went for 16 when he was bowled by Steve Pease, his score not a reflection of the quality of the knock. Another two quick wickets fell until Col Pickard rolled back the years slapping a brutal four of his own and seeing the innings through with Joel who had batted right through for a masterclass 108 not out. Many people were saying it was one of, if not the best hundred they had seen, and i don’t think many will argue as he never gave Heslerton chance all day. His ton included 15 fours and 1 six.
Heslerton set about the task of knocking Sherburn’s score off and lost opener John Wharton in the second over, bowled by Rich Pickering. Rob Brown came in at 3 and shared a 50 run partnership with opener John Howden. The partnership lasted 12 overs until Brown was spectacularly caught at gully by Kev Stocks off the bowling of Rich Pickering. Brown exiting for a handy 23. E.Senior shortly followed, caught by stand in wicketkeeper Jordan Wharton of the bowling of Nick Dobson. Matthew Webster came in and Sherburn were then made to work for the next wicket. In the search for wickets, Mr reliable Stu Pickard was introduced and in his 4th over got the prize wicket of John Howden, bowling him for 44. Sherburn were gald to see the back of Howden who was looking very threatening. Howden and Webster shared a 43 run partnership which lasted 12 overs. This was turning point. Not long after, Webster fell for a decent 16, bowled by Dobson, leaving Heslerton with it all to do. After this, none of the remaining Heslerton batsmen made an impression apart from an eggresive 19 not out from big hitter Steve Pease. Sherburn cruised to victory in the end thanks to good bowling from Rich Pickering 2-33 and Stu Pickard 2-18. The pick of the bowlers once again however was Nick Dobson who finished with 4-26 from 11 overs, following up his earlier knock of 36 to again show his all round value. The star of the show though was undoubtably Joel Wharton who was the difference between the two teams, WHAT A KNOCK!
Sherburn 2nd XI 128-4 (20 Overs) - P.Pickard 7, L.Jack 39no, D.Simpson 51, Jordan Wharton 19, N.Dobson 2, K.Stocks 3no. Bowling - C.Crawford 6-1-42-0, D.Baldry 10-0-62-3, N.Ringrose 4-0-21-1.
Hunmanby 125-8 (20 Overs) - L.Franks 18, M.Pearson 36, D.Medley 3, C.Crawford 18, R.Baldry 28, D.Baldry 4, N.Ringrose 7, A.Ringrose 1no, K.Atkinson 0. Bowling - P.Pickard 7-0-38-2, N.Dobson 10-0-60-1, S.Pickard 3-0-23-2.
Sherburn progressed to the Welford Cup Final by beating high flying Hunmanby by 3 runs in a true nail biter that went right down to the last ball.
Hunmanby won the toss and put Sherburn into bat on a wet track. Phil Pickard opened with Lee Jack and Pickard wasn’t going to mess about as he looked to take the attack to Hunmanby from the word go. After hitting an early boundary though, this approach was his undoing as he was easily caught and bowled by Dan Baldry for 7. In came Dan Simpson and after a shaky start he destroyed the short bowling of Hunmanby creating havoc in the Hunmanby ranks. He raced to a brutal 51 in 9 overs which included 8 fours and a fantastic straight six before being bowled by Dan Baldry. He shared a partnership of 73 with opener Jack as he also managed to capitalise on Hunmanby’s aggresive approach rotating the strike with ease. Next came Jordan Wharton who added a handy 19 until he was bowled by Baldry. He shared a 33 run partnership with opener Jack who carried his bat throughout for a decent 39 which held things together.
Openers for Hunmanby Leigh Franks and Matty Pearson started proceedings on a steady note for the chasers. Sherburn knew they had to make early in roads with the ability of the two batsmen at the crease. It was the batsmen who got going first who punished anything wayward with some lusty blows, especially from Pearson. The batsmen looked to be cruising until Phil Pickard yorked Franks to let the dog see the rabbit with the score on 49-1. No3 Dan Medley didn’t last long as he fell for just 3 to become the first of what was going to be 3 run outs after excellent fielding by Dan Bean. In came Chris Crawford who looked dangerous from the word go, and with Pearson still there, Hunmanby must have been confident. That was until Phil ‘mill’ Pickard again worked his magic as dangerman Pearson mis-hit one to square leg where Stu Pickard made no mistake after he was dropped earlier by Lee Jack. For the first time Sherburn could really smell blood. Pickard however had bowled his allocation and it was now up his younger brother Stu to try and dictate proceedings from that end, alot of pressure on the junior team skipper who had never been in this sitution before. Just as Sherburn thought they were getting somewhere, Ryan Baldry turned the game in Hunmanby’s favour as he scored at a rate of knots hitting the biggest six of the match off Nick Dobson straight back. Hunmanby again looked to be cruising as the pendulum swung. So to Stu Pickard who continued his wicket taking form to remove Crawford for 18 who was stumped by Martin Marflitt. This left Hunmanby needing 16 to win off two overs with Baldry still hitting and at the crease. Pickard has rose to everything thrown at him this year and this was no exeption as he sent Baldry packing, again stumped by Marflitt for 28. Hunmanby needed 7 to win off the final over and the pressure was firmly on both teams. Dobson bowled the final over which resulted in two run outs from good fielding by Rich Pickering and Dan Simpson as the pressure began to tell. This left Hunmanby needing 5 off 3 balls. The first of 3 was hit for a single to put skipper Kev Atkinson on strike needing 4 off 2 balls. The first was a dot. Dobson steamed in for the last ball, it seemed to have missed everything and be going for 4 byes until Dobson ran down the track puching the air and shouting in joy, indicating that it had skimmed the top of off stump with the bail only just dropping off! This sparked jubilant scenes as Dobson was mobbed by all the team to leave Hunmanby heartbroken. It was a great all round team performance with absolutely everybody playing a part spearheaded by Dan Simpson’s awesome 51. Credit to Hunmanby who were sporting and played their part in what was a blockbuster!
The final is at Ebberston on Wed 16th July…
BRING IT ON!!!! YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!

Thornton Dale 2nds 95-7 (33 Overs) - L.White 3, J.Knowles 25, K.Smith 9, G.Bayes 10, M.Todd 0, R.Mansfield 0, T.Hunt 17no, P.Waring 0, S.Asquith 9no. Bowling - P.Pickard 7-1-23-0, N.Dobson 15-9-8-4, S.Pickard 7-2-24-3, G.Appleby 4-0-21-0. RAIN STOPPED PLAY.
33 overs were managed in poor conditions at Thornton Dale. The pitch held firm but the constant drizzle became too heavy with the 33 overs being a bonus as Sherburn tried to push their promotion campaign as far as possible.
With Thornton Dale batting, Sherburn were keen to get out of the game what they could, maybe even a win as the skies filled. They got the breakthrough they wanted in the 6th over when tormentor in chief Nick Dobson trapped skipper Lewis White LBW. Once again though, as in previous weeks, the runs dried up, and so did the wickets. It took while the 19th over for the second to fall thanks to the bowling of the in form Stu Pickard. This seemed to open the door for Sherburn as the wickets began to fall. They eventually removed stubborn opener J.Knowles who was bowled excellently by Dobson, Knowles exiting for a handy 25. Sherburn took another 4 wickets after this in fairly quick sucession until a cultured partnership from youngsters T.Hunt and S.Asquith halted Sherburn’s wicket taking as they put on a rapid 27 run partnership with some attractive strokeplay. The rain then became too much as the innings was stopped on 95-7. A useful 3 bowling points for Sherburn in the conditions but they may feel they could have taken more. This effort was spearheaded by the ever valuable Nick Dobson who finished with astounding figures of 15-9-8-4 and the ever growing talent of junior team skipper Stu Pickard who finished with 3-24.
Sherburn 2nds 213-9 (40 overs) - Joel Wharton 2, L.Jack 11, D.Simpson 13, N.Dobson 30, S.Pickard 7, Jordan Wharton 56, P.Pickard 33, G.Appleby 9, M.Holtby 8no, M.Marflitt 10, D.Bean 0no. Bowling - N.Cook 7-0-21-1, A.Barrigan 7-0-41-2, S.Jackson 11-3-33-2, T.Barton 14-2-54-3, S.Shannon 1-0-8-1.
Scalby 3rds 65all out (30 overs) - T.Barton 0, S.Dawson 4, J.Eckersall 10, A.White 0, N.Cook 4, K.Tindall 14, S.Jackson 13, S.Shannon 0, A.Barrigan 0, S.Driscoll 9no, N.Sunley 0. Bowling - P.Pickard 7-1-11-3, M.Holtby 8-0-16-2, N.Dobson 7-2-11-0, S.PICKARD 5-5-0-5, D.Bean 2-0-15-0, D.Simpson 1-0-9-0.
Stu Pickard turned in a historical performance to brush aside struggling Scalby 3rds. In a rain affected game, Sherburn bounced back after last weeks dissapointment to claim maximum points and hopefully make back some ground in the league. The rain threatened on several occaisions but thanks to the use of covers and Scalby’s sportsman like behaviour the fixture was completed.
Sherburn were put into bat by Scalby which saw the return of Joel Wharton at the top of the order. Unluckily for Joel he was bowled by one that kept low as he looked to play through leg side but did show signs that he will be a welcome addition to the team. Lee Jack and Dan Simpson got in then out as they perished for 11 and 13 respectively. Then came the in form Nick Dobson. Dobson batted sensibly for his 30 which included 3 fours and massive 6 into Colin Hotham’s garage door. Dobson was well supported by watchful number 5 batsmen Stu Pickard as they pushed the score on. Sherburn were 70-3 after 13 overs but when Pickard and Dobson were dismissed in quick succession, the run rate had slowed a little to leave Sherburn on 86-5 off 18 overs. The foundation was laid for some middle order stability and that came in the shape of Jordan Wharton and Phil Pickard. Thay shared an 82 run partnership which was a joy to watch as both batsmen played good all-round cricket. Jordan passed his 50 in 12 overs and not long after was out caught for 56, his innings included 4 fours and 3 sixes for what was a tremnedous knock. His partner in crime Pickard followed shortly after for a good knock of 33. It was now upto the tail to ensure maximum batting points which they did through decent contributions from Gav Appleby, Mike Holtby and in the main Martin Marflitt as they posted 213-9.
Sherburn were keen to get as many if not all the wickets they could as more rain loomed. Mike Holtby made early in roads in the second over when he had T.Barton well caught by Lee Jack in gully. As the rain poured, Scalby struggled to deal with Sherburn’s accurracy and shut up shop as the wickets fell too slowly for Sherburn’s liking. A result was looking more and more of a tall order. Nick Dobson was brought in to the attack and failed to make breakthrough as the search for wickets continued. After 21 overs Sherburn had only claimed 5 wickets, thanks to 2 from Holtby and 3 from Phil Pickard who capped off a good all round day. Stu Pickard was introduced to try and make something happen, and happen it did! Stu ripped through Scalby in devastating fashion with a hall of fame like performance that will live on forever! In his 5 overs he bowled 5 maidens for 5 wickets. It was well deserved by Stu who has really kicked this season with the ball with this sort of performance looking like it was only around the corner. Stu’s ablitoration made sure Scalby fell short as they were all out for 65 to confirm him as a true match winner as he was mobbed by team mates when caliming his 5th wicket. Scalby must be praised for not throwing the towel in though as they were willing to play through the difficult conditions.
