Sherburn 2nd XI 132-7 (24 Overs) - Joel Wharton 15, L.Jack 2, D.Simpson 41, S.Pickard 6, Jordan Wharton 8, P.Pickard 1, K.Stocks 20, N.Dobson 15no, D.Stocks 5no. Bowling - S.Pinder 5-1-17-1, P.Dykes 6-1-22-1, I.Laing 5-0-30-2, S.Wardman 6-0-30-2, J.Metcalfe 3-0-29-1.

Sherburn progressed in to the Home Guard Sunday Cup Final with a victory against Division A outfit Commercial at Sherburn. All the teams Sherburn have beaten along the way have been from the division above, maintaining their unbeaten run in all competitions so far this season.

Sherburn won the toss and wanted to bat first but skipper Kev Stock’s hand was forced to field first in an attempt to sober up some thick heads from the night/morning before. Despite the hangovers, Sherburn got off to the ideal start with a wicket in the first over. Phil Pickard came up with the goods, dismissing visiting skipper Sean Pinder caught behind for a duck, the batsman clearly not happy with the umpires decision. In the over that followed, Lee Jack got rid of Pinder’s opening partner Eric Hall also caught behind for 4. Two overs later, Jack was among the wickets again when he bowled S.Pickin for 2 to leave the Scarborough based club struggling on 16-3. That was until Scott Wardman and J.Metcalfe got Commercial’s innings going with a great partnership of 80 in 18 overs to move the score to 96-3. As always though, just when Sherburn needed a wicket, the man to deliver once again was the red hot Nick Dobson (it was a sunny day). Dobson clean bowled J.Metcalfe for a solid knock of 27. After this it was the bowling of Dan Bean which really put the brakes on the innings as he ripped through the remainder of the batting order. The most significant of Iybe’s wickets was Scott Wardman who’s excellent innings of 43 was ended when the pace of Bean was just too much for him as he was bowled. Bean racked up a great return of 4-16 from 4 overs as Commercial ran out of overs finishing on 131-9. All Commercial’s wickets to fall were bowled except two which were caught behind. Having said that, 131 was by no means a bad score in this 30 over format.

Sherburn didn’t get off to too bad a start with the score moving on to 20-0 after 5 overs. Lee Jack was the first wicket to fall when he failed to back up his decent bowling display by chipping one back to the hands of bowler Sean Pinder for 2. Jack’s opening partner Joel Wharton followed in the next over when he was very well caught by Sean Pinder at mid-wicket off the bowling of P.Dykes for 15. Dan Simpson came in and pushed proceedings on nicely with a hard hitting start to his innings which left the score on 40-2 from the first 10 overs. Unfortunately for Simpson, the middle order failed to provide adequate support. All the time Simpson continued to score but the wickets of Stu Pickard, Jordan Wharton and Phil Pickard were lost cheaply, seeing the score now on 77-5 from 18 overs, the game could not have been more finely balanced. Just like Dobson with the ball though, when Sherburn need something with the bat, Kev Stocks usually delivers, and this was no exeption. Stocks joined Simpson at the crease and the pair managed to pass the hundred mark until Commercial hit back again when Dan Simpson departed for a fantastic 41, caught behind off the bowling of J.Metcalfe. 4 overs later, Commercial struck again when Kev Stocks was caught off the bowling of Scott Wardman for a plucky 20. This left Sherburn needing 14 runs to win with only 3 wickets and 7 overs left. Dobson once again though came up with the goods hitting a defiant 15 not out, well aided by Dan Stocks’ 5 not out to see Sherburn home with 6 overs to be bowled. It was a good semi-final but Sherburn probably just had the edge for more of the game than Commercial. One Commercial player to especially feel dissappointed will be Scott Wardman who really gave his all for his team. Wardman struck 43, kept wicket for the first 11 overs, after which he changed to bowling, returning 2-30 from 6 overs.

Sherburn now to look forward to meeting Scarborough 3rds in the final who are currently flying high in Division A. The final will be played at Forge Valley on the 12th July, 3pm start.

Stocks Has Oriel In A Stu

Sherburn 2nd XI 186-9 (40 Overs) - P.Pickard 7, L.Jack 0, S.Stocks 100no, S.Pickard 0, Jordan Wharton 8, K.Stocks 8, N.Dobson 21, D.Stocks 4, M.Marflitt 19, D.Bean 0, B.Simpson 1no. Bowling - J.Hunter 15-2-60-4, D.Parkinson 9-2-39-2, J.Haxby 9-1-39-1, P.Greenough 5-0-22-1, C.Bryan 2-0-9-1.

Oriel 119 all out (38.1 Overs) - J.Dixon 0, C.Bryan 9, P.Greenough 33, J.Haxby 16, N.McNally 0, M.Dove 1, J.Walkington 16, M.Dennis 4, R.Standfield 0, D.Parkinson 4, J.Hunter 9. Bowling - P.Pickard 10-4-16-2, N.Dobson 11.1-5-22-5, S.Pickard 7-0-34-0, S.Stocks 5-0-13-1, D.Bean 4-0-10-2, L.Jack 1-0-5-0.

Sherburn made it 7 wins out of 7 thanks to a stunning performance withthe bat from Stu Stocks. With Lockton 2ndslosing out once again at the weekend, it would seem that Wombleton are now Sherburn’s nearest challengers along with Thornton Dale 2nds in the league as they continue to build a very handsome lead at the top of Derwent Valley Division B.

Sherburn were put into bat by Oriel on a nice track at Sherburn. Oriel backed up this decision by putting Sherburn under immediate pressure thanks to good bowling from Jim Hunter and Dave Parkinson. After 5 overs, the Sherburn top order had been put to the sword with the score on 25-4, withboth opening bowlers claiming 2 wickets each. Kev Stocks joined his son Stu out in the middle and began a repair job on his shell-shocked Sherburn team. Stu and Kev kept things simple with some low risk batting whilst keeping the score moving nicely against a probing Oriel attack. The swede’s shared a 50 run partnership that spanned across 13 overs until Kev was caught at mid off by C.Bryan off the bowling of tall seamer Jamie Haxby for a stern score of 8, priceless in the situation. This saw the score now on a much improved 77-5 from 18 overs. Nick Dobson was next in and took over exactly where Kev left off, partnering Stu excellently as he passed his 50 in style. Dobson remained at the crease for 16 overs with Stu, sharing 55 runs with the number 3 batsman. Big Nicks birthday batting display came to end though when he was caught by R.Standfield from the bowling of P.Greenoughfor a great little innings of 21. Withbirthday boy departing, the scoreboard was showing 141-6 from 33 overs, a very decent position from what looked a hopeless one early on. With Stu’s innings still churning on, he was now in need of a new partner as the possiblity of a good Sherburn score and his ton was in sight. From the remainder of the Sherburn batting order, Martin Marflitt was the one who really stepped up to the plate crashing a quickfire 19 until he was bowled by C.Bryan. Stu and team-mates were starting to wonder whether a century would elude him with only Dan Bean and Ben Simpson left to bat and only 2 overs left. Bean departed for a duck, then Stu hit two fours and a single to leave him on 99 with two balls left at the non-strikers end. It was over to Ben Simpson, and with tea time approaching, it can be a very vulnerable time of day for Scream! Ben didn’t disappoint though, playing a lovely square cut to give Stu the strike for the last ball. Stu made no mistake, scoring a single, to finish with a fabulously measured innings of 100 not out, definately the saviour of the Sherburn on this occaision. Stu’s innings contained a collosall 16 fours. All this said though, Oriel put in a decent bowling bowling display, spearheaded by veteran medium pacer Jim Hunter, who finished with excellent figures of 4-60 from 15 overs. He was well backed up in the main by good displays from Dave Parkinson (3-39) and Jamie Haxby (1-39). Sherburn closed on 186-9.

At tea time, all the lads sang happy birthday to Nick Dobson who was celebrating his 40th birthday, most of which he has enjoyed with Sherburn Cricket Club, not just as a player, but as treasurer also. This explains the nice house and car! URRRRRRRR! The lads presented him with a fabulous cake which had a picture of him printed on it. All the best Dobbo, and thanks from everyone at the club for your efforts over the years!

The celebrations continued straight away after the jelly and ice cream and musical ferret’s (I could be your hero baby!) as Phil Pickard got rid of J.Dixon for a diamond duck when he was bowled off his pads. In the 3rd over, Pickard claimed his second victim when he bowled the aggresive C.Bryan for 9, Bryan’s lack of respect for the bowling was definately his undoing. After this Oriel began to show their worth with the bat as P.Greenough and Jamie Haxby put together an excellent partnership to frustrate the Sherburn bowlers. The pair put on 57 runs in 17 overs until Nick Dobson excellently bowled Haxby for a watchful 16. The breakthrough opened the door for Sherburn who managed to dislodge a further 6 batsmen in the next 9 overs, thanks to the experience of Dobson who was back in party mode, and Dan Bean who claimed two victims in decent little spell, well done Iybe. Among the batsmen to depart was Oriel’s top scorer for the day, P.Greenough. His 24 over stay at the crease was ended when he was bowled by Dobson for a steady 33. With 10 overs and 1 wicket remaining, Sherburn felt they would beat the impending rain that loomed. J.Walkington and number 11 Jim Hunter had other ideas though, firstly they ushered their team past a well deserved hundered, and as the rain began to fall, a draw was a possibility. That was until Dobson got the party poppers out again to remove the stubborn Hunter, bowled, for 9. Hunter had been a thorn in Sherburn’s side all day but with just 2 overs left, was dismissed by someone else who is also now officially, A VETERAN! J.Walkington remained still unbeaten at the other end on 16 as Oriel were back in the pavilion for 119.

 Scalby 3rd XI 93 all out (36.2 Overs) - P.Perry 13, S.Westmoreland 1, S.Jackson 30, S.Dawson 1, D.Slade 0, M.Hartley 1, S.Scott 16, G.Gardener 0, S.Driscoll 4, J.Lowe 0, M.Holden 0no. Bowling - P.Pickard 4-2-4-0, N.Dobson 12-4-25-2, S.Pickard 14.2-4-35-5, R.Pickering 6-2-16-3.

Sherburn continue to race away in emphatic fashion at the top of Derwent Valley Division B with this victory over Scalby 3rds.

Sherburn were put into bat on a decent looking wicket at Burniston when stand in skipper Lee Jack lost the toss. This proved not to be the best of policies as far as Scalby were concerned with openers Lee Jack and Joel Wharton commencing a ruthless onslaught on the Scalby bowling right from the first over. The score raced onto 80 without loss from the first ten overs with very little in the way of chances being given. This continued until the 23rd over when Scalby eventually broke the deadlock. Skipper Dawson bowling his off spin had Lee Jack caught at deep mid on by Stan Jackson for a very good innings of 45, this broke a 167 run partnership with Joel Wharton in which extras also played a major part. This seemed to perk Scalby up a little and that feeling increased slightly when Stu Pickard followed shortly after for 5 when he was caught off the bowling of spinner Stan Jackson. With Wharton fast approaching a ton at the other end, the runs kept coming. That was until Wharton was dismissed in exactly the same way as opening partner Jack when he was also caught by Stan Jackson from the bowling of Dawson for a powerful 92 which included 14 fours and 2 sixes, a stunning knock by Joel who was heavily dominant whilst at the crease. After this the runs continued to flow but so did the wickets. Sherburn passed the 200 mark in the 27th over. Dan Simpson added 26 in what was an attractive innings. Holiday maker Simon Cousins, back from ‘Living In America’ (James Brown), weighed in with a typically quickfire innings of 21 which mainly comrised of 2 fours and 2 sixes. Phil Pickard scored the majority of the remainder of the runs with 38 in what was a good knock by Phil hitting 6 fours along the way as he tried to push the score beyond 300. This was not to be however thanks to the perserverance of Scalby youngsters G.Gardener and J.Hartley who picked 3 wickets each. Credit to Scalby for keeping going in what looked a hopeless situation at one point. After taking the first wicket in the 23rd over, they needed only another 16 overs to claim the remaining 9 wickets. Despite the wickets falling though, Sherburn managed to score a hefty 283.

It was a case of damage limitation as Scalby went into bat as they weren’t going to give their wickets up easily. Sherburn got the early breakthrough they desired when Nick Dobson had opener Sam Westmoreland caught at silly mid off by Jordan Wharton for 1 in the 4th over. The only Scalby batsman that decided attack was the best form of defence was number 3 Stan Jackson. Jackson took advantage of some very aggressive field placings to score 30 from 27 balls which included 6 fours. Jackson’s aggresive innings was brought to an end when he was bowled by first change bowler Stu Pickard. After this it was a question of if Sherburn would be able to bowl Scalby out as the score set looked almost impossible to chase down. The main scourge of Sherburn was opener Phil Perry who scored 13 from 86 balls, taking 34 deliveries to get off the mark. The only real support for Perry came in number 7 S.Scott who scored 16 from 32 balls. After bowling his 3rd over, medium pacer Stu Pickard was deployed on a different front when he swithched to bowling his tweekleberry off spinners, in an efffort to try and bring the Scalby batsmen out of their shell. This seemed to work as Pickard bowled right through to the end claiming excellent figures of 5-35 from 14.2 overs. The other bowler to get in on the act was Rich Pickering as his 6 over spell reaped rewards of 3-16 to keep his solid season on track. Pickering claimed the wicket of mainstay Perry when he bowled the opener, breaking through what seemed to be a watertight defence. Scably eventually fell all out for 93.

Not quite a fantastic quippy headline like Jacko’s :) but I have finally updated the fixtures for the 2009 season sorry for the delay in getting these on the site!

If anybody has a copy of the Juniors and Cup fixtures could they send them over to me at gavin@penguin-zoo.co.uk and I will update them on the site.

Also would it be possible for somebody to take a team photo and head shots of the team members I have set up the player profile section on the site but need a mugshot to finish it all off. If somebody can get some pics that would be great and I can get that finished.

Any feedback for improvements are always welcome as well :)

Sherburn moved into the semi-final of The Home Guard Sunday Cup with this comprehensive victory at Division A outfit Flixton. Sherburn will now entertain another Division A team, Commercial, at Sherburn a week on Sunday.

Sherburn batted first on a good wicket at Flixton’s main ground. The opening pair of Joel Wharton and Lee Jack made an excellent start despite some early minor scares, taking the score to 52 without loss from the first ten overs. The batsmen continued to push the score along nicely until Joel Wharton fell in the 13th over, caught off the bowling of Sam Sweeting for a good knock of 36, sharing an opening stand of 68 with Jack. This caused the run rate to slow a little but Sherburn still manged to keep the board ticking over. Dan Simpson and Phil Pickard both scored 8 runs apeice until they fell bringing Jordan Wharton to the crease with the score on 98-3 from 20 overs. The score was nicely set up for Sherburn to try and take the initiative. Sherburn did just that with some hard hitting from Jordan Wharton who shoved the score along quickly. Wharton’s stay at the crease was ended though when he was excellently bowled by L.Lowery for a blustery 25, sharing a 32 run partnership with Jack in just 4 overs. Kev Stocks was next to enter the fray for Sherburn and with the field spread, he and Jack manipulated the gaps superbly to keep the score moving along. That was how it remained until the end with Stocks finshing unbeaten on 16. Lee Jack at the other end played a measured innings, carrying his bat throughout scoring 64 with his wicket still intact. Jack’s innnings included 8 fours and was the catalyst of Sherburn’s very decent score of 174-4.

Flixton struggled to get the start that Sherburn enjoyed thanks to tight bowling from Phil Pickard and Nick Dobson. The openers bowled 3 overs each, at the end of which, Flixton had moved onto 13 without loss. Dan Simpson was then introduced with the ball and wasted no time in getting a wicket to his name when he had K.Samuels caught by Jordan Wharton for 10 with his very first ball. At the other end, Rich Pickering was brought into the attack and along with Simpson, continued to apply a strangle hold on the Flixton batsmen. Simpson struck again two overs later when Phil Pickard continued his excellent run of fine catching to get rid of opener L.Lowery who departed for 4, it was a fantastic take by Pickard. The very next over brought much the same as Pickering then got in on the act. J.Gilbank tried to take the bowler on when facing his first ball, only for Joel Wharton to take a stunning catch one handed in the deep, one of the best catches ever seen, to see Gilbank depart for a golden duck. In the next 4 overs that followed, Pickering and Simpson took another wicket each, Simpson despatching Sam Sweeting who made a plucky 19 until he was bowled. This left Flixton reeling on 43-5 from 15 overs. Simpson’s chin music saw him finish with figures of 3-23 from his 6 overs, while Pickering grabbed a smooth 2-16 from his 6 overs. Lee Jack followed up his sterling batting effort by stealing Rich Pickering’s weekly slice of rabbit pie. Jack recorded figures of 3-7 from 5 overs, Dan Bean offered Jack good support with the ball at the opposite end with figures of 1-16 from his 5 over stint. The remaing wicket was taken by, er, Jordan Wharton in the last over. I think Jordan was worried when he saw who was under the ball as it went skywards off the bat, but his brother Joel must have felt sorry for him and decided not to drop the catch! Joel even got chance to roll back the years when he bowled the 29th over, never seen Joel be so fast without the noise of a dump valve or big bore exhaust. Flixton youngster Dave Brannan battled hard to the end, as he tried to show his colleagues the way with a repectable 19 not out. Flixton falling well short on 100 all out.

Fylingdales 2nd XI 81-7 (20 Overs) - J.Beech 0, W.Morley 13, M.Spagnolo 23, K.Heyes 23, P.Holdsworth 1, B.Heyes 0, B.Hogarth 0, H.Pinder 1no, J.Collinson 1no. Did not bat - T.Spagnolo, J.Tunnelly. Bowling - P.Pickard 7-0-29-2, R.Pickering 4-0-15-2, N.Dobson 9-0-26-3.

Sherburn 2nd XI 85-1 (13.3 Overs) - D.Simpson 60no, L.Jack 10, K.Lickes 6no. Did not bat - P.Pickard, K.Stocks, Jordan Wharton, N.Dobson, R.Pickering, M.Marflitt, B.Simpson, T.Haldenby. Bowling - B.Hogarth 2-0-18-0, K.Heyes 2-0-11-0, W.Morley 5-1-19-0, M.Pinder 4.3-0-22-1.

Sherburn romped into the semi-final of The Welford Cup when they travelled up to Fylingdales for the second day running. Sherburn are the current holders of this cup and really fancy their chances of retaining the trophy.

Fylingdales batted first and struggled to push the score along quick enough for the 20 over format facing both sides. Out of the 9 Fylingdales batsmen that took part, only 3 reached double figures, with 3 ducks and 3 scores of 1 run. The 3 batsmen that caught the eye were firstly Will Morley who scored 13. First team regulars Karl Heyes and Mario Spagnolo made 23 apeice but eventually departed. The bowling was again spearheaded by the raving Nick Dobson who followed up Saturday’s 19 over spell with a further 9 overs. Dobson finished with 3-26 from his spell, the highlight of which was his first ball when he nearly didn’t get his arm over due to the stiffness which gave the batsmen something to smile about. UUUUUURRRRRRRR! Nick was well supported by Rich Pickering who claimed 2-15 from 4 overs and Phil Pickard who returned 2-29 from 7 overs, Phil benefitting from a change of ends to his Saturday spell. Dales closed on 81-7.

Sherburn wasted very little time in passing Dales’ total, thanks to the efforts of a trendy pop inspired Dan Simpson. Simpson and Lee Jack shared a 52 run opening partnership of which Jack only scored 10 till he was the only Sherburn wicket to fall when he was trapped lbw by M.Pinder. This was little consolation for Dales though as Simpson dominated, punishing most things that were served up, displaying some awesome technical shots. Simpson finished on 60 not out which included 6 fours and 2 sixes. Dan showed that he could be something to watch out for in future when coupled with the right mental attitude. Kev Lickes replaced Jack at the crease, finishing on 6 not out as Simpson stole the show.

Sherburn 2nd XI 139-9 (40 Overs) - P.Pickard 19, L.Jack 11, S.Pickard 3, D.Simpson 20, K.Stocks 40, Jordan Wharton 4, N.Dobson 1, R.Pickering 21, M.Marflitt 11, T.Haldenby 1no, D.Bean 1no. Bowling - W.Estill 15-1-52-3, B.Hogarth 6-1-9-1, A.Fewster 7-1-20-1, R.Storey 8-0-29-4, J.Beech 4-0-24-0.

Fylingdales 2nd XI 96 all out (39.5 Overs) - J.Beech 27, J.Collinson 9, W.Morley 0, P.Holdsworth 18, A.Fewster 5, B.Hogarth 9, J.Fewster 5no, R.Storey 3, W.Estill 0, D.Craggs 0, J.Tunnelly 0. Bowling - P.Pickard 3-1-9-0, N.Dobson 19-4-27-7, S.Pickard 6-0-18-0, L.Jack 4-0-19-0, R.Pickering 7.5-1-10-3.

Sherburn pressed towards the 100 point mark making it 5 out of 5 in The Derwent Valley Division B at Fylingdales. This was mainly thanks to matchwinning performances from the old gaurd of Kev Stocks, Nick Dobson and Rich Pickering. Sherburn are now the only unbeaten team in the division as previously unbeaten Lockton 2nds lost out to Scalby 3rds.

Sherburn batted first and once again away from home were faced with setting a score on a bowler friendly track. Phil Pickard gave Sherburn the early impetus taking the attack to the bowlers. Phil’s endevour soon got the better of him though when he was caught by Andy Fewster at mid wicket off the bowling of B.Hogarth for a sharp 19. Another Pickard to be the victim of over zealous strokeplay was Stu when he was trapped lbw by experienced campaigner Bill Estill for 3. The youngsters continued to try and force the issue, this time in the form of Dan Simpson who played some excellent shots, but unfortunately this was ruined by some poor shot selection as he spliced a drive to the again waiting Andy Fewster at silly mid off to give Rich Storey his first wicket. This left Sherburn on 54-3 from 17 overs. Things didn’t get any better for Sherburn as 2 overs later Lee Jack’s wall was eventually knocked down when he played on to swing bowler Storey which saw him depart for a cautious 11. Fylingdales were starting to expose the cracks in Sherburn’s batting order at this point and continued to carry that momentum forward as firstly Jordan Wharton and then Nick Dobson departed cheaply. This left Sherburn struggling on 60-6 from 20 overs with the tail well exposed. Rich Storey was a having a great time with the ball, claiming 3 of the 6 Sherburn wickets. As was last week though, skipper Kev Stocks again stood firm for his troops, digging them out of the trenches along with ‘cool under pressure’ Rich Pickering in what turned out to be a fantastic partnership against the odds. The pair shared a 65 run partnership across 13 overs with Stocks scoring a measured 40 and Pickering with a ‘cool’ 21. Both fell though to the relentless line and length of old stager Bill Estill to leave the dales bowler with workman like figures of 3-52 from 15 overs in the heat. Martin Marflitt added a brisk 11 to secure another batting point until he became Storey’s 4th victim to leave the bowler with great figures of 4-29 from 8 overs. Dan ‘tyrone’ Bean even batted, AND SCORED ONE RUN! You should have seen it! Sherburn closed on 139-9.

Dales made a solid start in chasing down Sherburn’s very gettable total, not conceding a wicket until the 10th over. As per usual the wicket taker was the in form Nick Dobson who struck twice in consecutive balls to remove J.Collinson and Will Morley, both bowled. After this early blip, dales backed up their resilience with the ball with some of the batting kind as P.Holdsworth and J.Beech pushed the score along nicely, frustrating the Sherburn bowlers. Fylingdales looked in prime position to knock Sherburn’s total off as the score moved onto 57-2 from 20 overs. As the day wore on though, so did Dobson, and he reaped the benefits when he broke the 11 over 45 run partnership by bowling P.Holdsworth for a very decent 18. This brought dangerman Andy Fewster to the crease with the game very nicely poised. The turning point of the match came when Dan Bean excellently caught J.Beech at backward square leg to give Dobson his fourth wicket. Beech on his way for a stylish 27. With Fewster at the crease though there was still plenty of hope for dales. These hopes were dashed somewhat though when Stu Pickard took a stunning diving catch off the bowling of Dobson to send Fewster packing for 5. At this stage things were starting to slip for dales as they now needed 58 to win with 5 wickets remaining from the last 10 overs, with Rich Pickering and Dobson giving little away. Sherburn increased their grip on the game in the overs that followed, with a dales win starting to look impossible. It also looked highly unlikely that Sherburn were going to bowl Dales all out as they had to wait while the 36th over to claim the 6th wicket. It was Pickering who made it happen, claiming his first wicket of the match thanks to a diving catch by Phil Pickard who managed to beam himself back to earth just in time to hold on. Nick Dobson, still going, claimed two wickets in the 37th over to give Sherburn another bowling point and Rich Pickering took the remaining two to skittle dales out with one ball of the innings remaining, Pickering staying ‘cool’ till the end. Pickering backed up his solid batting display by returning a ’smooth’ 3-10 from 7.5 overs, while Dobson bowled a mammoth 19 overs for a mere 27 runs claiming a superb 7 wickets. All of Dobson’s first 5 wickets were the top 5 batsmen and this haul takes his tally to 25 wickets from 5 league games.

As well as Dobson’s fantastic week in week out form, Jack Pickard and Ben Simpson kept up the trend making 3 out of 3, locating a chippy on their travels.

Kasra crashes Cloughton

Sherburn juniors got back into winning ways with a solid all round display in the heat at Cloughton.  Fielding first and having to deal with a short boundry on one side of the field the juniors started brightly with Lewis Adams and Jamie Thompson opening the attack.  However the folly of Thompson bowling to a short leg side boundry was soon revealed as his flighted spin wasdispatched over the boundry with ease.  This prompted a slight rethink and saw inform Callum Pickard introduced to the attack.  “Ten men” made an immediate impact taking the wicket of J.Long with his second ball, smartly caught by a nervous looking Damon Hakin.  Lewis Adams then removed the other opener H.Whealan and then P.Couch in consecutive overs to finish with 2-9 from 4 overs.  Callum Pickard continued to apply pressure by consistently bowling with swing and accuracy to finish with 3-11 from 4 overs.   Aaron Howard then turned the screw further with his leg breaks and gathered up a brace of wickets for 5 runs conceded, including one of two tidy stumpings from Jack Pickard. As the wickets fell the Cloughton line up wobbled and looked ready to collapse but some resolute tail end batting saw the Cloughton innings finish on 72-9.  A challenging score boosted by 23 combined extras.

The Sherburn reply started badly as Aaron Howard was bowled in the first over for a duck.  Calamity followed as a poorly timed drive from Robin Worthy floated up between two Cloughton fielders, this prompted a game of yes no yes no between Worthy and Jamie Thompson and resulted in Thompson run out for 1.  This brought Kasra Deaghan into the fray.  Faced with some hostile sledging from his fellow but opposing school mates Kasra started nervously but soon started tucking into the Cloughton bowling and played some stylish and wristy shots on his way to a retirement score of 25.  Meanwhile Robin Worthy gave solid support and a resolute defence as the winning post came into sight.  Following Deaghan’s retirement skipper Ben Simpson came into bat looking to steer his side home.  After a few rash shots and a chat with the coach Ben proceded to pick off the required runs and take advantage of the short boundry and with the game going into the 18th over the scores were tied.  However Cloughton still had something to say and F.Smuck bowled Robin Worthy for a gritty 12.  This brought Alex Bryon out to the crease who after a couple of looseners clipped the winning run over the infield to seal a 7 wicket victory Sherburn.

Cloughton 72-9, J.Long 18/H.Whelan 11.  L.Adams 2-11/C.Pickard 3-11/A.Howard 2-5

Sherburn 73-3, R.Worthy 12/K.Deaghan 25ret/B.Simpson 16*

Sherburn maintained their 100% Derwent Valley League Div B record with this win at Seamer. It was very much a tail of the Seamers as expected on a Seamer track that has lacked a good roll due to their heavy roller breaking down. Sherburn’s league title push is really starting to gather momentum now as they have only dropped 4 points in the first 4 games.

Sherburn had the task of batting first and C.Garrard wasted no time in removing PHIL PICKARD FOR A DIAMOND DUCK with an excellent yorker first up that would have beaten many batsmen on any track. Despite being the first Sherburn 2nd team player past 100 runs for the season, Lee Jack soon followed when he was caught in extra cover off the bowling of Garrard for 1 in the sixth over, only the second time this season the opener has been dismissed in 4 games. Shortly after this, Kev Vasey got among the wickets when he bowled Stu Pickard for 11. At this point Sherburn were 16-3 and for the first time this season, had a fight on their hands, spearheaded by Seamer’s Garrard. Dan Simpson decided attack was the best form of defence, nudging the score up to 36, scoring a rapid 21 which included some fantastic lofted drives, unfortunately the Ariel route isn’t always the safest as Dan found when he became Garrard’s third victim, caught. Sherburn were now 36-4 from 11 overs with some solidarity required. Sherburn had just the batsmen at the crease for this situation though in the shape of Chris Cousins and Kev Stocks. The pair didn’t fail to disappoint either in an 18 over vigil at the crease, compiling a partnership of 65 to leave Sherburn handily placed on 102 after 28 overs. It was the relentless Garrard that broke the partnership when he had Chris Cousins caught by Kev Vasey, Cousins exiting for a stern 28. Sherburn now looked to accelerate and build on the platform. Jordan Wharton added 13 until he was stumped, Nick Dobson contributed 12 until he was seen off by an immaculate diving catch at long off by Seamer skipper Craig Baker to give Garrard another scalp. Kev Stocks eventually lost his wicket, also to Garrard who was bowled, Stocks exited for a true skippers innings of 36, just when his team needed it. Junior skipper Ben Simpson had a SCREAM at the end of the innings making a handy contribution of 5 not out at the end with some hard hitting but failed to score a boundary as the field was spread. Sherburn were really pleased with their closing score of 150 on a difficult wicket having been off the rails somewhat at one point. C.Garrard was the man of the innings though, claiming 7-51 from 19.1 overs in sweltering conditions, a fine effort physically and mentally.

Seamer made a solid start in reply with Sri Lankan S.Liyanage punishing anything leg side for 4. Sherburn talisman Nick Dobson struck back by removing Liyange’s partner L.Darby lbw for just 2. Fellow opening bowler Phil Pickard followed suit by claiming the prize wicket of hard-hitting skipper Craig Baker. The workmates going head to head with Phil managing to come out on top when Baker creamed a drive back at the bowler with some power, only for Pickard to hold on caught and bowled sending Baker back for a duck, much to the delight of Phil who danced about like he’d overdone the Haribo Tangfastics. Liyange continued his onslaught on anything leg side, giving Sherburn something to think about as the score kept ticking over. The introduction of Stu Pickard with the ball slowed Liyange though and some pressure began to build, and as always, Nick Dobson exploited the pressure when he caught and bowled the dangerman for a decent 33. After this it was a hunt for wickets for Sherburn as they increased their grip over the Seamer batsmen. Seamer defended stoutly and where no easy victims but the more the game wore on, the taller the order of passing Sherburn’s total became. Dobson continued on his rampage claiming 5-23 from 13 overs including the Lidl factor of 6 maidens, that puts Dobson on a massive 18 wickets from 4 games already this season. Stu Pickard bowled excellenty without reward in his 6 overs which went for only 18 runs. The remainder of Seamer’s resistance was cleaned up by Ben Simpson and Rich Pickering. Simpson continued to have a SCREAM claiming 1 for 8 runs off 5 overs, very impressive by the junior leg spinner in his first proper bowling spell in senior cricket. Rich Pickering ended S.Richardson’s resistance when he bowled the mainstay for a gritty 17. Pickering claimed the remaining wicket to finish with 2 wickets for 3 runs from 4.3 overs. The rabbit pie must have really been repeating on Rich come Monday after another slice on Sunday!

Juniors wicketkeeper Jack Pickard kept up his excellent away record too, making it two out of two. After sloping off to visit the tea room in Ravenscar, he followed this up by a trip to the chippy during the game at Seamer to leave Ben Simpson stranded with out a meal for an hour on the field of play.
